 Timeless History

Having been affiliated with the Beta Rho Omega chapter of Hopkinsville, Kentucky for many years and being a dedicated and cohesive group of members, the need was recognized to become an independent organization. Due to the increase of members in both the Hopkinsville and Bowling Green areas, for more effective program implementation in each area, establishing a chapter in the Bowling Green area was decided.

An interested group of members met on October 30, 1984 at the Dero Downing University Center on the campus of Western Kentucky University. At this meeting, the following officers were elected:

President-Shirley Sisney, Vice President-Bettie Esters, Recording Secretary-Marilyn Mitchell, Corresponding Secretary-Patricia Cooke, Treasurer-Ersa Austin, Parliamentarian-Shirley Malone, and Publicity Chairman-Kelly Campbell.

Those who expressed an interest in establishing a chapter were: Ersa Austin, Amanda Barlow, Brenda Bell, Kelly Campbell, Patricia Cooke, Theresa Cowherd, Bettie Esters, Greta Fishback, Vivian Glass, Emma Forte Kendrick, Shirley Malone, Marilyn Mitchell, Sylvia Payne, Shirley Rainey, Anna Senter, Dorothy Shanklin, Shirley Sisney, Wanda Snead, and Sarah Sweatt.

From concerns for all members and the eagerness to be of service to the religious, social, educational, and civic needs of the Bowling Green-Warren County area, the group excitedly fulfilled all obligations necessary to become a chartered chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The chartering ceremony was held on March 31, 1985 at the State St. Baptist Church.
